These layered shapes were originally inspired by the texture and delicacy of peeling birch bark observed during hikes along Lake Superior in Minnesota. Vulnerable birch trees are telling the story of climate change as a widespread decline is rapidly impacting this region due to climate- related diseases, insects and drought. As colorful abstract compositions, Shapes investigate our estrangement from nature and her wild processes. For some, a familiarity with trees may be more common through the material of plywood — trees that have been harvested, debarked, graded, bonded and pressed for human consumption — rather than through the touch of living bark.
