During my artist residency at the Anderson Center (2021), I became curious about returning to locally-source handmade, natural materials as I had used in the Foraged series. Upon arriving at the residency, I was taken by the large amount of fallen black walnuts laying in the lawn outside of my studio. I gathered them and brought them into the studio to create a dye. Using only this locally-sourced color, I dipped sheets of paper into the bucket of dye, watching as the color left its mark on the page. After the paper dried, I dipped it again, creating layers of color, soft and dark brown with white negative space. The final step was to collaged laser cut white bristol paper, integrating the shapes that nature shows me, that I observe when I look at trees.
