I developed the Shoreline series from 2014 - 2018, inspired by the undulating edges of the Mississippi River, Lake Michigan, and other bodies of water. Walking along these bodies stoked my desire to connect with the abyss of blue before me. It evoked a simple question: Am I satisfied to enjoy the water from the comfort of dry land, or do I wish to step in? I recognized how every shoreline is a boundary, a divide between two distinct spaces, and two distinct states of being. Collapsing this duality onto canvas and erasing the visual separation, I expressed this divide as a textured acrylic pathway surrounded by expanses of blue.
